Defensive Driving Tips

February 17 2020 / By Scott Odierno

more

There are many different ways that you can conduct yourself on the road. However, there are certain techniques that provide for safer driving than others.

Read on to learn how you can keep yourself and those around you safe by utilizing defensive driving practices.

How to Drive Defensively

  • Leave plenty of space. It’s a good idea to always leave enough space between your vehicle and the one in front of you so that you have plenty of room if you suddenly need to slow down or stop. A good general rule to follow is to leave at least one car length between your car and the one ahead of you for every 10 miles per hour (mph) of speed you’re traveling. For instance, if you are going 60 mph, you should leave a minimum of six car lengths between your vehicle and the one in front of you.
  • Avoid aggressive drivers. Aggressive drivers are everywhere. If someone is tailgating you, move over into another lane to let them pass. If someone is making hand signals at you, ignore them. If someone is speeding, don’t try to prevent them from doing so—you could end up getting hurt, and that’s never worth it. If someone is making excessive and sudden lane changes, stay away from them. Report aggressive drivers to the authorities if you’re able to do so.
  • Expect the unexpected. No one is perfect and people make mistakes all the time. Expect those driving around you to do the wrong thing, and you’ll consistently be prepared for the worst-case scenario. While needlessly worrying is never a good idea, it’s wise to prepare for what can happen on the road so you’re not caught off-guard if the worst does happen.
