The Odierno Law Firm is pleased to announce that a local student, Danielle Gering, has been selected as the recipient of its 2024 Brianna Liebeck Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship was offered as a way to honor Brianna’s memory and to help a female student-athlete in Suffolk or Nassau County with some of the financial burdens of college. Danielle will receive a $15,000 scholarship for tuition and fees.
Please join us in congratulating Danielle!
Meet Our Winner: Danielle Gering
A 2023 graduate of Bellmore-Merrick Central High School, Danielle has been accepted to Sacred Heart University in Hartford, Connecticut. At Sacred Heart, Danielle plans to study healthcare with the goal of working in radiology.
Danielle was inspired to get into the healthcare field due to health issues within her own family. In 2015, her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. After several years of treatment, Danielle’s mother went into remission. She is now healthy and thriving. However, in 2021, Danielle’s family received devastating news when her father was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease at 50 years old.
Just a teenager when they received his diagnosis, Danielle has taken on a lot of responsibility in the house by helping her dad when her mom isn’t at home. She also is dealing with the emotional impact of watching her father slowly but surely lose his memories. As she describes it, his disease is like a tree, with the leaves on the branches representing memories that her father lost. Although she knows that it is what her father would want, Brianna has mixed feelings about going away to college. She plans to cherish every moment that she has with him – and every memory of their lives together.
These memories include her father’s tireless support of everything that Danielle did. He never missed one of her games and was always the loudest fan in the stands. As a 3-year varsity lacrosse and volleyball player, Danielle’s dad had a lot to cheer for over the years – including her participation in the 2023 varsity lacrosse championship.
In addition to her athletic career, Danielle volunteered and raised funds for the Susan G. Komen Foundation for 7 years. She also was a volunteer for One Special World, an organization devoted to destigmatizing special needs. In addition to maintaining a strong GPA and playing multiple varsity sports, Danielle was the manager of the varsity football team and the Class of ‘24 club.
Danielle truly honors the memory of Brianna Liedeck between her devotion to her family, her volunteerism, her outstanding academics, and her athleticism. We are proud to award her this scholarship in Brianna’s honor. Congratulations, Danielle, and best of luck at Sacred Heart!
