The Odierno Law Firm is pleased to announce that a local student, Sydney Anastasia, has been selected as the recipient of its 2023 Brianna Liebeck Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship was offered as a way to honor Brianna’s memory and to help a female student-athlete in Suffolk or Nassau County with some of the financial burdens of college. Sydney will receive a $15,000 scholarship for tuition and fees.

Meet Our Winner: Sydney Anastasia
A 2023 graduate of Westhampton Beach High School, Sydney has been accepted to The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. At Ohio State, Sydney plans to study Biology as part of a pre-health track. She has been accepted in the Pre-Health Professionals Living Learning Community at Ohio State, where she will be surrounded by peers who are also committed to working in the healthcare field. She has a particular interest in working as an occupational therapist with pediatric patients.
Sydney graduated with honors from Westhampton Beach High School, with a final GPA of 96.4. She was a volleyball player for Westhampton Beach and was awarded All-County Academic and All-League by the Suffolk County Volleyball Coach Association. She also received the Long Island Radio Broadcasting Thomas Cutinella Service Award for acts of kindness, selflessness, and improving lives. She also earned the NYS Attorney General Triple “C” Award for courage, commitment, and character. While at Westhampton Beach, Sydney was a member of the National Honor Society and the Science, Mathematics, and World Languages Honor Societies.
In addition to being a standout student and athlete, Sydney is a cancer survivor who has used her experience as a pediatric cancer patient to help others. At age 9, Sydney was diagnosed with stage 4 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. After 5 months of grueling treatments, she was able to carry a banner that said “Survivor” at the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life Event. When she was well enough, she resumed sports, playing soccer, basketball, volleyball, and softball year-round. By high school, she narrowed her focus to volleyball, where she excelled.
When Sydney started high school, she knew that she wanted to give back. Together with her friends, she started a childhood cancer awareness club that raised over $13,000 to help kids with cancer. Sydney organized and hosted fundraising events, and ultimately presented the club’s work to the Board of Education. At the start of her senior year, the Board approved the WHB Golden Canes as an official school club. Taking this extra step will ensure that the Golden Canes will continue to do the work that Sydney started – and will continue to help kids with cancer in and around Suffolk County.
Sydney truly emphasizes the spirit of Brianna Liedeck, and we are proud to award her this scholarship in Brianna’s honor. Congratulations, Sydney, and best of luck at Ohio State!
